I haven't met many people who like tentacle fics. Of course, this is probably because most of them are purely smut. 'Unexpected Side Effects' is a tentacle fic like no other, for one, it's character and plot driven, and sex is barely mentioned.
What I love about this story is how competent Cloud is, but in a way which is completely believable. Cloud is still a trooper in this fic, as it takes place during that disastrous mission to Nibelheim. Instead of killing Sephiroth though, Cloud manages to knock him out with a well-thrown metal canteen to the head. Ridiculous, yeah? Not really.
Instead of Jenova claiming Sephiroth, something far weirder happens. The Jenova cells are triggered to mutate and both Sephiroth and Zack loos their legs for tentacles. Happily, this isn't permanent, but it is hilarious to read about.
At the very beginning of the story, we find out that Cloud has shot and killed Hojo - don't worry, it's not a secret - and we continue the story with Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth trying to get back home, or at least back to Midgar in one piece, which is far more difficult than it sounds. It's made even more interesting when Cloud accidentally wakes up Vincent who becomes very, very interested in Cloud, and we see a lot of an oddly protective papa!Vincent who is very, very keen to watch over Cloud...well, stalk him anyway.
There are a lot of humor moments in this story, but they are offset by a deeper, darker, grim subplot complete with ominous foreshadowing. We see a lot of character development in this story, especially from Cloud, and the hooks are well placed to keep you reading (although I really didn't need them, this story was so good anyway it's not like I could have become bored).
When I decided to add this to my list of favourite fanfics, I actually got distracted and ended up re-reading the entire thing from beginning to end - that's how good it is.

If you're already a fan of tentacle fics - you'll adore this one, and if you love reading decent, long, gorgeous, detailed, emotive, interesting, gripping fics with amazing characterisation, and a delicious plot, then this fic is perfect for you - just make sure you put aside some time to read it, because once you start reading this fic, you aren't going to want to stop until you get to the very last word!
