FFVII: Last Order

Talk about a massive let-down. I mean, yeah, the transitions between the scenes were easy to get past, after all, if you've ever spent any prolonged time in an anime/game fandom (or been a long-running Highlander fan ::peterwingfieldislove::) then numerous and frequent flashbacks are something you get blasé about.
What I didn't like was the way the scenes felt, very rushed and stilted, with unnecessary length added to scenes of little import, and those scenes which truly matter to the story being cut short, in a matter of speaking.
The first half was the best, and I can quite easily see myself re-watching 'Last Order' simply for the Zack/Cloud interaction, even if it was all one-sided. That was good, if too short.
The moment when Zack and Cloud were caught up with on the truck should have been extended, so we could see what happened, since it was a vital part in the story, especially with the marked interest Hojo showed in them in the Nibelheim reactor.
I expected a bit more from 'Last Order' than what I got, and I feel cheated, not at the small length of the work, timewise, but more in that it appears that little care went in in making 'Last Order' a good, if short, piece of background animation. The story was choppy and left loose strings that were relevant to this period of FFVII history dangling all over the place, with extra hints and characterisations that seemed to lead to places suddenly coming to an abrupt end, it was very much a case of fin en queue de poisson.
Sephiroth was extremely lacking, nothing went into the reasons behind his decent into madness, and the fight scene between him and Zack was a real disappointment.
The fight scenes needed a lot of work done. The angles were crap, and the choreography was utterly dismal. When Sephiroth fought Cloud, there were one or two golden moments, but otherwise it remained flat and ridiculously bad. Seriously. I'd even go so far to say it was a waste of time.
Coming from me, and my (::coughsecretcough::) obsession with everything FFVII, that says something.
So, in breakdown, excellent start, then it sort of peters out midway before coming to a stuttering halt before then dying a graceless, miserly and utterly forgettable death.
I kid thee not.
I would have got 'Last Order' anyway though, because it's so rare to be able to see Zack (yes dammit it's Fair, hah!) at all, much less fighting, and his treatment of Cloud is truly priceless and the only thing that redeems 'Last Order' from being recommended to be used as garbage.
God I love Zack. Not as much as Cloud, but still, he comes in pretty damn close. I cried when I realised I couldn't afford to get the special edition Crisis Core PSP and extras. Unfortunately the rent has to come first.
Mind you, I can't even afford a second-hand PSP, so it doesn't really matter either way.
Anyway, in closing. If you're a FFVII fangirl/boy, then grab 'Last Order' for your collection, if you're not, then you haven't really missed out on anything you'd regret.
Hugs,
~Shi-koi~
(The fu&%$ng keyboard keys 'Z', 'X' and the right side of the space bar are STILL sticking. Dammit!)

Date: 2007-12-28 08:33 pm (UTC)I adore Zack. Not as much as Cloud, but Zack! He's so full of life, and funny, and sweet, and loyal, and brave, and...and...::sniffle::
::wails:: He shouldn't have died!
Have you watched some of the fight scenes from CC? Isn't the way Zack fights just brilliant? I want CC! But I can't afford it. ::sigh:: I'm going to wait for a few years until it becomes affordable, because I am incapable of saving money for anything for any length of time.
Anyway...Nice to meet you back, and cheers for friending me!

Date: 2007-12-29 12:55 am (UTC)I adore his 'Let's Mosey' line. It's teh gold!
Wasn't he just uber-emo!Cloud in FFVII:AC? I loved him anyway, because he's too cute to stay upset with, and even all angsty and broody he's still fun to watch. I preferred his actions in FFVII, and I loved the chocobos. (I want one!)

Date: 2007-12-29 09:49 am (UTC)I agree. Cloud's hair was a definite plus. Not as spiky as it was in the game, but more so than I expected, somewhat. Mind you, that flick on the end of Loz's head was certainly just as gravity-defying.
Seeing AC-versions of Chocobos would have been amazing. If only for the colours. ::sniffle:: Alas, 'twas not to be. Pity.
